Interested to see how much money I made online in my first month blogging? In my October 2017 blog income report, I share exactly how much I made online through this blog.
Note: This post includes affiliate links.
How it all began…
Back in early 2014, I stumbled across Abby Lawson’s blog looking to learn how to make printables. I began reading her blog regularly and then discovered she published her income reports.
At first, I was shocked to learn that blogging was a way to make money. As the months progressed, I was in awe at how much her income was increasing. She wrote a detailed guide to starting a blog and how she grew her blog in the first year.
I was in. I devoured Building a Framework and launched my first blog a few weeks later. Building a Framework was my go-to resource as a newbie blogger.
Then in 2015, my life was turned upside down…
While I came out of the turmoil a much stronger me, I had lost the passion for my blog. I’d come to dread the amount of time and effort it was taking up. Working full-time, running a household, and raising three kids as a single parent, I just didn’t have the time and energy to commit to something that didn’t feel right anymore.
But I began to miss blogging. I felt there were things I’ve learned through my struggles that I could share with others.
Simply Unscripted was born out of a desire to help fellow women find the balance in their life. Show them how to let go of the overwhelm and constant busy-ness and begin focus on taking care of themselves.
Why would I share my online income?
When you are first starting out as a blogger, there is so much to learn and implement. By sharing my story, hopefully you can learn from my successes (and mistakes). I’ve learned so much from reading other blogger’s income reports and hope to inspire others to start their own blog.
Additionally, sharing my income reports allows me to reflect on what’s working, what’s not working, and what I can do better. It will be a means to hold myself accountable.
First Month’s Blog Income Report
We all have to start somewhere. The first month doesn’t amount to anything, but I’w working on building a strong foundation for my blog. I knew from past experience that it would take a few months to gain traction and start seeing results.
I’ll be reporting income for the month it was earned. Most forms of blog income are paid 60-90 days after it was earned. Income that is earned this month won’t be in my bank account for a couple months.
Note: While I published a couple of posts in September, October 2017 was my first full month blogging.
Blog Income Sources:
Google Adsense – $8.40
Most companies that offer ads for bloggers have minimum pageview requirements which I haven’t reached yet.
Amazon – $0
I’ve placed a few links but haven’t earned anything here yet.
Most of these require more pageviews than I have; I haven’t applied to any sponsored posts this month.
Bluehost – $0
I paid for a year of hosting when I first registered Simply Unscripted.
Social Media Scheduling
Tailwind – $0
I paid for a year of Tailwind in September. I love being able to spend a little time once a week to schedule all my Pinterest activity and then let it run itself.
PicMonkey – $7.99
I’ve been using PicMonkey for a few years now and it’s my favorite photo editing program. I love being able to save my images so I don’t have to start from scratch every time I want to make a new Pinterest pin. Having templates saved in PicMonkey saves me tons of time each time I create a new post. Eventually I will opt for the annual plan to save money.
Convertkit – $29
Yes, Convertkit is a more expensive option for your email list. I feel like I’ve tried every other option out there….and every time I’ve come back to Convertkit. It was built by bloggers for bloggers and is a very powerful tool, even for beginners.
Freshbooks – $19.95
Have to keep track of those numbers!

Lessons learned this month
1. I forgot how it takes a good number of posts before you start gaining traction traffic-wise.
2. You can’t do everything. Focus on one thing at a time and build from there. Right now, I’m focusing on Pinterest and my Facebook page. Twitter and Instagram can be added after I’ve gotten a routine down for the other two.
Goals for November 2017
- Complete my money resources page.
- Reach a minimum of 10,000 pageviews.
- Write at least one gift guide post to drive affiliate income.
